The Shellback

In maritime tradition, sailors who cross the Equator participate in the celebrated "Crossing the Line" ceremony, a playful initiation into the "Order of Neptune." Through this rite, inexperienced "pollywogs" become seasoned "shellbacks"—trusted sons and daughters of Neptune, honored for their courage in braving the open seas.

Inspired by this tradition, The Shellback is the quarterly newsletter and voice of the Master Mariners. We warmly welcome your clever articles, engaging photos and graphics, ideas, and suggestions. Please send your contributions to Martha Blanchfield at shellback@sfmastermariners.org.
