Cancellation of 2020 Master Mariners Regatta

The MMBA Board has been keeping an eye on the rapidly changing situation with the Coronavirus pandemic.

With so many competitive boats in the fleet, it is with heavy hearts the Board has decided to cancel the Regatta, Sponsors Lunch and Awards Dinner for 2020. We plan to hold the events in 2021 on their usual dates.

The decision was not made lightly - the Regatta is the highlight event of the organization, and we all look forward to the tradition. But our responsibility is to prudent stewardship through this difficult time.  In that light, we decided to cancel rather than postpone for a number of reasons. The uncertainty about the how long this situation will continue, including the duration of state and local public health advisories/mandates on social gathering; potential challenges in securing a new permit with the Coast Guard; coordinating a rescheduled event between the three supporting yacht clubs and securing a committee boat with race officials; competing with other events trying to reschedule their cancelled events; and likely reduced turnout for a rescheduled event all played a part in our decision.

The Board is actively considering a number of social and sailing options to bring members together as conditions allow, and will plan and support such events if it is feasible. The 2020 boat show, annual meeting and Labor Day Cruise-in to China Camp remain on the calendar for the time being.  Serious consideration has been given to hosting the 2020 members meeting and elections at the Labor Day Cruise-in to China Camp if the Boat Show in June is cancelled.  Regardless of which events are or are not held, we will continue our fundraising and charitable works in the months ahead.

For the few members who have already registered for the Regatta, you will receive a full refund. Sponsors have the option to continue their support for 2020, roll the sponsorship over to 2021, or receive a refund.

All the best and stay safe,

The MMBA Board
